Dust, Drought and Dreams Gone Dry: Oklahoma Women in the Dust Bowl

Interviews were conducted with more than one hundred women individually and in groups who lived through the Dust Bowl, primarily in the seven western-most counties of Oklahoma where the Dust Bowl hit the hardest. The women interviewed share accounts of good and hard times, and myriad topics including social life, challenges of domestic life during the Dirty Thirties, the Works Progress Administration (WPA), President Franklin D. Roosevelt, canning and home remedies, hobos, gypsies and bootleggers. Additional topics include Black Sunday, rabbit drives, killing of their cattle, and full details of coping with dust from what has been called the worst natural disaster ever.
