Barbara Abrash was Head of Media Projects at the Institute for Research in History in New York City in 1983 when she first heard of Angie Debo. An independent feminist historian herself, she understood the importance of capturing Angie Debo’s story. She teamed up with Martha Sandlin, a filmmaker originally from Holdenville, Oklahoma, and the two went on to co-produce Indians, Outlaws, and Angie Debo, the documentary about Debo’s life which won the 1989 Erik Barnouw Award of the Organization of American Historians for outstanding historical documentary.
