Dr. Belinda Bruner, writer and former professor at Oklahoma State University (OSU), talks about growing up in southeastern Oklahoma and the difficulties of making friends in school due to prejudice towards her mixed-race heritage. She discusses her early interest in reading, writing, and singing and her decision to pursue degrees in vocal performance and English. After receiving her PhD in English from OSU, Bruner discusses her 26 year teaching career at OSU and expresses her admiration for the student population. She discusses her writing process and shares some of her poetry. Bruner also discusses her new novel about her own family history and shares advice for writers in Oklahoma.
