Bill Maddux joined the Stillwater Fire Department on October 31, 1950 as one of thirteen men on the force. On November 22, 1963, the day of John F. Kennedy’s assassination, he was appointed Fire Chief by the Stillwater City Commission. Though he was not expecting these new responsibilities, Maddux rose to the role and led the Stillwater Fire Department out of troubled times and into the future. Under his leadership, Stillwater passed the most supported bond issue ever to provide funds for a new fire station. This led to the construction of Fire Station Number One on South Main Street, as well as an extended water line for Stillwater. Bill retired on October 31, 1971, exactly twenty-one years after he started.
