Description
Janet Smith was born in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and always knew her Cherokee heritage. She received formal art training from Bacone College as a nontraditional student, but after learning about art therapy, she enrolled at Emporia State University to pursue her master's in art therapy. Smith taught art at multiple colleges and started an art therapy program at the Cherokee Jack Brown Center, of which she became the director in 1995. Smith received the Cherokee Medal of Honor in 2004, and she discusses how she serves the people of her tribe by offering her therapeutic art skills to connect people to their culture and community.
