Dr. Kim Johnson, from Williamson, Georgia, is the District Literacy Specialist at Pike County Schools. She describes how the sense of place became important to her writing and being during the quarantine as she spent rich time on her farm. She talks about the inequity in internet access among the districts in her state and how only about half of her students in her rural district were able to access the online lessons, as well as the ways the pandemic pressured lawmakers to address these issues. Johnson explains how her district handled the shutdown and the plans to reopen school in the future. She shares the ways she has looked for silver linings and is hopeful about what we will all eventually learn from the COVID-19 pandemic.
