Marie Kerr was born in 1947 in Verdun, France, to parents that had emigrated from Poland. She grew up speaking Polish with her family, and once she started school she switched to French. She did not study English until her late teens, when she was first introduced through comic books. Marie secured a job with the American military when she was seventeen years old. When that base in France closed, she transferred to an American military base in Germany. While visiting her sister, who had married an American and moved to Oklahoma, she met and eventually married an American herself. She moved to the United States in 1968 at the age of twenty and began a family. Marie later passed the exam to become an official American citizen, something she is very proud of
