Mary Jo Edgmon was born in Okemah, Oklahoma in 1922 to Charlie Edward and Nora Belle Guthrie, the last of five children. When she was three, she moved to Groom, Texas to live with her Aunt Maude and Uncle Robert, who raised her until she was eight. She then lived with her father and his second wife, Betty Jean, as well an ‘adopted’ brother Fritz Buzbee, in Pampa and later Borger, Texas. At sixteen, she moved back to Oklahoma, to Konawa, where she lived with her brother Roy and his wife, Ann. She graduated from Konawa High School in 1940 and married her husband Hulett that same year. The couple soon moved to Seminole, where they raised their son Hugh and lived for many years. In this interview, Mary Jo talks about her childhood and her relationship with her brother, renowned folk musician Woody Guthrie.
