Ron Tyrl joined the faculty of Botany Department at Oklahoma State University (OSU) in 1972 and retired in 2008. He recalls his decision to study plants, his educational path, and his first college teaching experience. Tyrl gives the history of the department as well as the history of the OSU herbarium which he curated for many, many years. He talks about his research focus, how the herbarium improved under his watch, his publications, and his love for collecting and preserving specimens. Tyrl also discusses the founding of the Oklahoma Native Plant Society, the diversity of plants in Oklahoma, and working with the illustrator, Bellamy Parks Jansen.
