U. L. Smith was born five miles north of Hollis, Oklahoma, in 1920. After seven years, his family moved to Dill City, where he attended school and helped his father farm. In 1941, as soon as he turned twenty-one, U. L. was drafted to the United States Army. He was discharged as a draftee and re-enlisted so he could serve in Hawaii, because he was interested in seeing the island. He completed boot camp at Schofield Barracks in Honolulu on December 6, 1941. The next day, he looked out the window of his dorm to see airplanes strafing the barracks. Pearl Harbor was being attacked. In this interview, he recounts memories from this day and the weeks following this historic attack.
